Chapter 18

A Problem

Anna had no idea how long she had been asleep when she felt Eve come to her. It was pitch black, clouds hiding any illumination the moon may have offered. She could sense his warmth and closeness against her skin. She felt his soft kiss on her cheek once, then again. She reached out her arms up to pull him closer and kissed him full on the lips. He pushed her blanket back, climbed in close to her, and pressed his body against hers. She ran her hands under his clothes, feeling his well-formed muscles, and pulled his soft sweater off. They both continued to undress, his lips pressed against hers all the while and she delighted in the weight of him all over her, breathed in his scent, felt the texture of his hair between her fingers as she pulled at it, revelled in every inch of him. She thought of nothing else in this moment, nothing but wanting Eve. He leaned over her and she wrapped her legs tight around him. The clouds parted, and the moon shone full on his face.

She made the horrifying discovery!

Staring down, with a lascivious smile, was the face of Joe Bruno. He laughed at her revelation and she, in turn, screamed, kicking him with all her strength to get him off her. He thrust her arms back violently and kissed her neck, her shoulders, her lips, enjoying his power over her while she struggled as hard as she could under his wicked grip.

Anna opened her eyes to bright sunlight streaming through her apartment window and sat bolt upright in panic, covered in sweat, gasping for air. Candide’s bed was empty and Eve was no longer on the couch. She jumped as the alarm went off next to her. She turned it off and fell back down on her bed.

What kind of messed up dream was that? Was it all a dream? Was Eve ever there? It felt so incredibly real. She was still fully dressed. There was no way it could have happened. Yet she still felt Eve’s kisses all over. Shamefully, she still felt Joe’s kisses, too. Even more shamefully, she was aware of savouring the feeling of both.

She dragged herself out of bed. Candide was reading at the table, her yoga mat unfurled behind her. Eve was nowhere to be seen.

“Has he left already?”

“Yes. Busy day, apparently.”

“Oh. Me too. I should get ready for my lecture.”

“Are you okay?”

“Yes. Fine. Why?”

“You just… You seem kind of rattled. No more nightmares?”

“No, no ghosts.” Anna forced a smile. “Just adjusting to daytime.” She hastened down the hall to shower. Walking past Eve’s door, she slowed, but saw no sign of anyone inside. Reluctantly, she showered, dressed, and made her way back to her apartment. Candi had left by then, so she gathered her things and made her way to the lecture theatre, stopping only to have her mug filled with fresh coffee on the way.

She, like the other students, did not sit front and centre this time.
